History of Grama Panchayat
Puthuppariaram, Vallikkode, Kavilpadu and Nochuppilly became the Panchayat. The first name of Vallikkode was Vallikkadu. The legend of the place name goes like this. Once upon a time, a few people from the Pan community came to this hillock to collect firewood. While collecting firewood, they got stuck in the Vallipadar; it got dark. To escape from the trap, they meditated on the goddess and sang hymns, removed the Vallipadar and moved forward. Bamboo shoots were made into fire lamps and the darkness was driven away. This incident is the basis for the pashikti that is still performed in temple festivals. It is believed that the game of Panan became the pashikti. The Vallipadar temple and its land properties, which were under the supervision of the ancient Kootalatharavattu family of Vallikkode, were later transferred to the Thiruvilvamala temple. Most of the workers of the Commonwealth Ottu Company on the Panchayat border and the Beedi Company in the nearby areas were from this area. The sense of community that naturally arises as workers became an impetus for understanding international situations. As a result, the Pangal Siva Kshetra Kulam Theendal struggle, which was carried out to resolve the social neglect experienced by Harijans and backward classes in the areas where they lived, grew into the rights struggles of the peasant labor movements against feudalism. Among the prominent leaders who led this were N.N. Yusuf, C.B. Kunjippa and V.A. Hamsa. Padmanabha Menon's role in the cultural history of Puthu Pariyaram is incomparable. His service as a community reformer will be remembered forever. His poem Kettu Kalyanam was a whipping against corrupt community customs. In 1940, the then Palakkad king Shekhara Varma Kanakath Padmanabhamenon was honored with the title of Varakavi. A large part of the present-day Puthu Pariyaram panchayat was also in the Vallikode section. In 1955, the people voted for the first time and elected a local government committee. Although the area was very close to the city, the transportation facilities were inadequate. Common people often walked from Vallikode to Palakkad city by walking along the railway line. Most of the produce from Vallikode, a vegetable growing center, was transported by this route. This was an easy route for the workers of the Olavakotte Ottu Company and students going to the city for high school education. The Vallikode railway station was first established in this panchayat. This station, which was very useful to the people, did not last long. During the Second World War, the army camped here. The Government Welfare School in Industrial Estate Muruli is an institution that was formed after the army left. The cooperative society of those who left the army runs two industries here. They are timber works and metal works. The tax levied on bullock carts and taxes on trade were the sources of income of the panchayats at that time. Puthuppariaram Grama Panchayat is an agricultural village with a beautiful landscape of green fields, hills and valleys. Paddy is the main crop here. Coconut, banana, vegetables and tubers are also grown as intercrops. In addition, cashew, tapioca, pepper, rubber, ginger and kavung are also grown. Although various velas and kummattis are celebrated with the center around Hindu temples, these become festivals for all sections of people regardless of caste and religion. With the change in land ownership, the festivals that had been stagnant began to be held with more popular participation. Places where caste and sub-caste groups lived together on the basis of occupation were known as tharas with the name of the community attached to them. The Naikkan community here is a group that speaks a language similar to Telugu. Since there is no uniqueness in customs and beliefs, the characteristics are only in word of mouth. This has spread in the community through generations and has been maintained. Most of them work in the brick-making sector. They are also an economically backward group. Ten to twelve libraries are functioning in various places. The National Reading Room Library, which has been operating for three decades, has become the cultural center of the panchayat.
